As the world's largest broadcasting union, the ABU reaches more than half of the global population. The ABU, founded in 1964 as a not-for-profit, non-governmental, non-political, professional association of broadcasters and broadcast media players, has grown into a media powerhouse in the world's most active region.

ABU's membership base spans around 65 nations and territories on five continents. The Union provides targeted capacity-building services in journalism, sports, programming, and technology to its diverse 230 members.

TRT became a member shortly after ABU’s establishment and has been playing an active role in the union. TRT Director-General Prof. Mehmet Zahid Sobacı has been elected as the President of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) during the 60th General Assembly of the union hosted by the Korean Broadcasting System and held in Seoul from October 31 to November 1, 2023.

As the Turkish Radio Television Corporation (TRT) family, we are very excited to welcome all colleagues and members of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) on 18-23 October 2024 in İstanbul on the occasion of the 61^st ABU General Assembly and Associated Meetings.

As Türkiye’s first and only public broadcaster, we have a great pleasure to host one of the most important events of the Union in our beautiful Istanbul, with its magnificent historical heritage, glamorous silhouette, cultural richness and fascinating ambience that harmonizes historical fabric with modern identity.

This year has a particular importance for both ABU and TRT as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of our experiences in the media field. We hope that this year's event will be an unforgettable experience for each of participants as we celebrate altogether our tremendous experience in broadcasting.

At this year's meeting, we will focus on the interaction between media and human through the prism of widely discussed artificial intelligence technology, under the theme “The Nexus of AI, Broadcasting and the Society”. Our event would greatly contribute to endeavors to fully grasp the potential implications of artificial intelligence on broadcasting and society in today's media landscape that demands immediate adaptation to technological developments.

In addition, our preparations are well underway for the ABU Prizes and ABU TV Song Festival, which will be held on the margins of the General Assembly as every year. I sincerely hope the upcoming events will be productive for all of us and you will leave Istanbul with pleasant memories.
